Edwards Sound has been supplying professional audio equipment to Auckland events since the 1960s. Our portable PA systems come from the same professional hire fleet we use for corporate events, school productions, and large public gatherings — not a separate consumer-grade stock purchased for the hire market.
Every portable PA system in our range is built by Chiayo Electronics, a world-leading Taiwanese manufacturer of professional portable sound systems. Edwards NZ has been the New Zealand distributor for Chiayo for over 25 years. We know this equipment inside out, we service it ourselves, and we stand behind it completely.
Battery-powered PA — what that actually means
These are not Bluetooth party speakers running on AA batteries. Each unit contains a commercial-grade rechargeable battery — the same lead-acid or lithium technology used to start motorcycles and marine engines — powering a professional Class D amplifier, a full-range speaker system, and one or more UHF wireless microphone receivers, all in a single self-contained unit. Plug in a microphone, connect your phone via Bluetooth, and you have a complete sound system operating entirely without mains power.
Battery life ranges from 5 to 6 hours playing music up to 10 to 12 hours for speech-only events, depending on the model. Mains power is accepted by all models for all-day events where a power outlet is available.
The wireless repeater system — genuinely unique
Every model in our Chiayo range supports wireless companion speakers that link to the master unit via RF signal with no audio cable required. Place a second speaker up to 80 metres away — on the other side of a road, at the far end of a field, in a separate marquee — with no mains power at the remote position and no cable between the two units. Additional speakers can be chained using the repeater system to extend coverage further across large sites, race courses, or events spanning multiple zones.
This capability is rare in the portable PA market and it is one of the reasons Edwards recommends this range for outdoor events where coverage over a large or awkward site is required.
Wireless microphones included
All packages include wireless microphones as standard — not as a paid extra. Handheld, lapel, and headset options are all available and can be mixed within the same package. Microphone styles can be swapped at no additional charge, and additional wireless microphones can be added for a small fee. All receivers operate across 100 selectable UHF channels for reliable interference-free performance across busy outdoor sites.

These portable PA systems are ideal for:
Wedding and funeral ceremonies, school sports days and athletics carnivals, outdoor community events and public gatherings, race courses and fun runs, agricultural shows and field days, markets and street festivals, corporate presentations and outdoor conferences, sports commentary and field announcements, mobile aerobics and fitness classes, mobile presenters and celebrants, any venue or site without reliable mains power access.
